As the BBC prepares to air the third and final episode of the latest series of SHERLOCK episodes, North American audiences are still over a week away from seeing them hit PBS. But, there is good news as creator Steven Moffat has confirmed that SHERLOCK will return for at least two more seasons. The news comes at the premiere of the final episode of the year, “His Last Vow”, where Moffat revealed the news that will surely makes fans of the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman detective show very happy.
The Radio Times reported Moffat’s news:
“Rather excitingly, Mark [Gatiss] and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus… and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future,”
Moffat called the ideas for the fourth and fifth series the best that he and Mark Gatiss have ever had. Fans of SHERLOCK have waited two years between the second season cliffhanger and the three new episodes that are ringing in 2014. SHERLOCK has an unusually short run each season but each episode serves as a standalone film and doesn’t feel like TV at all. Cumberbatch and Freeman have brought a unique quality to their portrayals of Holmes and Watson that rival the likes of Basil Rathbone as the best put to film.
When we can expect the next two seasons is unknown as both stars are highly in demand these days. Cumberbatch is coming off his busiest year with roles in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, and THE FIFTH ESTATE. Freeman starred in THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, Edgar Wright‘s THE WORLD’S END, and is currently filming the FX series FARGO, based on the film from The Coen Brothers.
So get excited, SHERLOCK fans, because more is coming. It is just a matter of when. SHERLOCK’s third season airs in the U.S. on PBS beginning January 19th.
