Shit gets real as Bad Boys 3 could finally start moving foward

It's been fifteen years since the last installment of the BAD BOYS franchise, and after many years of toiling in development hell, it seems that the belated sequel may finally start moving forward. Variety has reported that Sony Pictures is close to greenlighting BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, but as we've been burned before, don't break out the moderately priced champagne just yet.

According to the outlet, a new draft of BAD BOYS FOR LIFE has finally met with the approval of producers and production could even get underway in early 2019 with the plan being that the film will be released for Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in 2020. Will Smith is reportedly on board to play Detective Mike Lowrey once again, but Variety says that Martin Lawrence has yet to agree to terms. Chris Bremmer (THE WEDDING RINGER) was the latest to tackle the script, and Sony believes that he's delivered the "right mixture of action set pieces and laughs." Unlike the first two movies, Michael Bay won't be directing this installment as Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (GANGSTA) have signed on helm the sequel. Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch believes that this new team will be the right one for the job.

Before Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah boarded BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, Joe Carnahan (THE GREY) was slated to write the direct the project before he departed due to scheduling conflicts. When he was still involved, Carnahan had teased that BAD BOYS FOR LIFE would have been the "strongest of the trilogy thus far," adding that the film would have dealt with "what becomes of Bad Boys when they're not boys anymore." Carnahan also said that "there’s a lot of funny shit in this movie, and there’s also a very mysterious, but tonally spot-on story that I think is kind of perfect for where we are in this day and age, where the guys are and reflectively, a very modern take on these guys." No word on whether any of Joe Carnahan's script has survived, but it seems that we may actually get the chance to find out. Unless Sony pulls the plug once again.
