It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard any news about a third film in the Sicario franchise. Still, Deadline is bringing the heat today with an update about the long-gestating sequel that’s bound to get fans excited. According to the outlet, Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin are returning for Sicario 3, with Padraic McKinley directing from a script by Oscar nominee Steven Knight.
A Modern Crime Classic is Born
Created by Yellowstone and Tulsa King mastermind Taylor Sheridan, the first film in the series exploded in theaters, with action-thriller fans unable to get enough of the trio’s explosive, morally grey chemistry. Sicario also helped put Denis Villeneuve on the map, who went on to shoot classics like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 after stunning audiences and critics with Sheridan’s tense, contemporary western drama.
Morally Grey Mechanics: The Core Players
In Sicario, FBI agent Kate Macer (Blunt) serves as the audience’s ethical compass, dragged kicking and screaming through the mud by Matt Graver (Brolin), a swaggering, flip-flop-wearing CIA operative who plays by his own rules. Then there’s Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro), the brooding, vengeful lawyer-turned-assassin whose ice-cold gaze and ruthless methods redefine the phrase “collateral damage.” Operating way outside legal boundaries, Kate quickly discovers the task force’s true purpose goes far beyond standard law enforcement.
Crossing Lines and Shifting Factions in Day of the Soldado
Three years after the original’s release, Stefano Sollima stepped up to direct Sicario: Day of the Soldado, with Sheridan once again penning the screenplay. Blunt did not reprise her role as Kate for the follow-up, leaving Del Toro’s lethal Alejandro and Brolin’s pragmatic Graver to shoulder the narrative alongside Isabela Merced’s Isabel Reyes. Reuniting the core trio for part three brings the story full circle.
The Bidding War Begins
Deadline says the search for a director to helm Sicario 3 was exhaustive, with McKinley ultimately landing the gig. He’s working with Knight on the script now, incorporating notes from the stars, with plans to roll cameras at the top of next year. While Lionsgate released the first two entries, sources say the third installment will go to market with several heavy-hitting studios already opening their wallets to acquire distribution rights.
