The battle to play the Queen of Pop in Material Girl is on! According to The Ankler, a well-known industry newsletter, Euphoria stars Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira both auditioned to play Madonna in the upcoming biopic. Julie Garner (Ozark, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) is also said to have placed her pearls in the ring for the coveted role.

Material Girl is being directed by Madonna, who co-wrote the script with Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body, Young Adult, Juno). Madonna’s top pick to play herself in the film is Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Midsommar). However, with so many actresses being auditioned, it’s doubtful that Pugh will get the part. Whoever ends up landing the role will have to exude a certain “bad girl” vibe as they aim to portray one of the most iconic pop stars of all time.

Hailed by her fans as the Queen of Reinvention, Madonna has taken on several personas throughout her storied career. Mothers used to warn their daughters about Madonna’s scandalous behavior while secretly wanting to be her. Celebrated for her musical prowess, raw sexual energy, and ability to adapt to the times, Madonna is a legend through and through. Whoever ends up playing her in Material Girl will be made to push themselves to the limit.

Are you excited to see who lands the role of Madge in Madonna’s Material Girl, and do you think Sydney Sweeney has what it takes? Is there another actress that you think is perfect for the part? Let us know in the comments section below.
