When the Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith (inspired by the 2005 action comedy film) was renewed for a second season, reports said it was unlikely that stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine would return. Instead, the show would be taking an anthology series approach, with a new couple taking up the alias of Mr. and Mrs. Smith each season. Now we know that Glover and Erskine will be reprising their roles in the new season to some extent, but there will indeed be other Mr. and Mrs. Smiths around – and Deadline reports that one Mrs. Smith will be played by Francesca Scorsese (We Are Who We Are), daughter of Martin Scorsese.
The first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith starred Glover and Erskine as two lonely strangers who land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?
The first season finale left things open-ended, with it unclear if Glover and Erskine’s characters survived a climactic shootout.
We don’t know how much screen time Glover and Erskine will have this time around, but we do know that Glover is expected to direct multiple episodes in season 2. He previously directed the season 1 finale.
In addition to Scorsese and, to some degree, Glover and Erskine, Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 will feature Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) and Talia Ryder (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) as a different Mr. and Mrs. Smith pair.
At one point, Sophie Thatcher had been cast in the role Ryder will be taking on, but eight months ago it was revealed that the show was being delayed indefinitely due to casting issues. Thankfully, those issues have been resolved and filming on the new season began in the first half of April.
Co-created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a reimagining of the 2005 film. Anna Ouyang Moench serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer alongside Glover for season 2. Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, and Fam Udeorji return as executive producers, joined by Erskine.
