Universal's classic monsters are making their way back to the screen in an all-new shared universe, and leading the charge is THE MUMMY.
Director Alex Kurtzman was clearly given a lengthy shooting schedule for THE MUMMY, as filming has been going on for several months. Paparazzi captured images of the film's stars Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis on set way back in early April. Three months later, spy pics have delivered a look at a character we've all been anxiously waiting to get a glimpse of: Sofia Boutella as the Mummy herself.
Boutella's Mummy made her first public appearance, in all her bandage-wrapped glory, on the streets of London yesterday, as THE MUMMY crew shot a sequence involving her, some large fans, and a bunch of extras who were sent tumbling. ComingSoon got their hands on nearly 50 pictures from the set, a select few of which I have included in this article. In these pictures, it appears that the Mummy is controlling some kind of supernatural force that's causing havoc around her.
I like the look of the Mummy here. Her style is unique while also being a nice nod to the mummies that were shambling across the screen in the '30s and '40s. It's certainly a step up from the "shirtless bald dude" iteration of the Mummy as seen in THE MUMMY 1999 and THE MUMMY RETURNS.
Scripted by Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS), this modern reboot of THE MUMMY has the following synopsis:
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
In addition to Cruise, Wallis, and Boutella, the film also stars Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Javier Botet, with Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll.
THE MUMMY is set to arrive in theatres on June 9, 2017.
