Songbird: Michael Bay-produced pandemic thriller coming to PVOD next month

A few weeks ago, the trailer for the Michael Bay-produced pandemic horror film SONGBIRD arrived online, and at that time it was said that the movie would be released sometime next year. As it turns out, we're getting it a little earlier than that. 

STXfilms chairman Adam Fogelson has announced that SONGBIRD will be getting a premium VOD release on all transactional platforms beginning on December 11th. The film will be available for $19.99 for a 48-hour rental. The film will also be available to watch on "a major streaming service" in 2021.

Directed by Adam Mason, who also wrote the screenplay with Simon Boyes, SONGBIRD was the first film to be shot in Los Angeles during the pandemic and is actually about the pandemic – but the story is set in the not-too-distant future.

Four years into quarantine the virus has changed and so have we… 

In the terrifying thriller SONGBIRD, the COVID-23 virus has mutated and the world is in its fourth year of lockdown. Infected Americans are ripped from their homes and forced into quarantine camps known as Q-Zones, from which there is no escape, as a few brave souls fight back against the forces of oppression. 

Amid this dystopian landscape, a fearless courier, Nico, who’s immune to the deadly pathogen, finds hope and love with Sara, though her lockdown prohibits them from physical contact. When Sara is believed to have become infected, Nico races desperately across the barren streets of Los Angeles in search of the only thing that can save her from imprisonment… or worse.

KJ Apa and Sofia Carson star as Nico and Sara, and they're joined in the cast by "Bradley Whitford and Demi Moore as a wealthy couple who may hold the key to Nico's mission; Alexandra Daddario as a singer enmeshed in a messy and forbidden affair; Paul Walter Hauser as a disabled veteran whose best friend – a drone named Max – is his eyes and ears to a world that has left him behind; Craig Robinson as Nico's boss; and Peter Stormare as the corrupt head of the city's 'sanitation' department, which seizes those infected and transports them to the Q-Zone.

Invisible Narratives' Adam Goodman, Andrew Sugerman, and Eben Davidson produced the film with Bay and Catchlight Studios' Jeanette Volturno, Jason Clark, and Marcei Brown.

I'll probably watch SONGBIRD at some point, most likely when it reaches the streaming service. There are movies I would pay PVOD prices for, but this one isn't quite on that level for me.
