Space Mountain movie in development with Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold

Although they can't all be winners, I've learned not to turn my nose up on movie projects based on theme-park rides or toys; after all, who would have thought that THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or THE LEGO MOVIE would have become as successful as they did. Certainly not me. Disney is looking to give another one of their famous theme-park attractions the movie treatment as THR has reported that the studio has tapped Joby Harold, who is writing and executive producing the Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+, to pen the script for a live-action Space Mountain movie based on the popular attraction.

As I've never been to Disneyland, I know next to nothing about Space Mountain, but versions of the attraction have popped up in several of Disney's parks around the world over the decades. From what I understand, the ride doesn't really have any memorable scenes or characters like those found in Pirates of the Caribbean, but THR says that the live-action film will merely be using the ride as an inspiration and that it's been described as a family adventure. In addition to penning the script, Joby Harold will also be producing the SPACE MOUNTAIN film. Harold is also known for his work on AWAKE, KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD, as well as Zack Snyder's upcoming ARMY OF THE DEAD for Netflix.

As for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Ewan McGregor is slated to reprise the role of the Jedi Master for a story that will be set between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE. Development on the project has experienced a few hiccups since it was announced, but McGregor said last month that production will hopefully kick off next spring and that the series is expected to consist of a single season at this time. Meanwhile, ARMY OF THE DEAD will debut on Netflix sometime in 2021.
