While Marvel movies would usually go straight to IMAX, Christopher Nolan’s monster epic, The Odyssey, would keep the stranglehold on the premium format for an extra amount of time. However, IMAX has announced that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be taking over the giant screens and sound systems starting this week on Thursday, August 6. Interestingly, Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal and Zendaya won’t even be leaving the format with this changeover as they all star in both movies.
To clarify, The Odyssey will still be showcased exclusively during its 70mm shows. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will share the digital presentations at select locations, so check your local listings as tickets start going on sale tomorrow.
IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond, stated, “Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades — with the franchise delivering $365 million in IMAX receipts to date — and Brand New Day is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend. We believe more Spidey fans around the world will want to experience his latest adventure in IMAX — and we hope to be a major driver of both new and repeat viewing for the latest hit in this incredible year for moviegoing.”

Our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, echoed my own sentiments about the movie being surprisingly mature with a lot of character moments and some good drama. In his 8/10 review, he says, “Wisely, new director Destin Daniel Cretton doesn’t try to push the envelope even further in terms of spectacle, going somewhat lower-key in this fourth sequel. […] Whatever the case, I had a good time with Brand New Day. While it wasn’t the rollercoaster ride No Way Home was or as innovative as the animated Spider-Verse movies, I preferred it to the first two Holland-led Spider-Man movies. It’s surprisingly mature, with some strong characterization as the character evolves into a more adult-skewing hero.”
