Hand-drawn “Spooder-Man” poster goes viral as Spider-Man: Brand New Day crushes box office records

The promotional blitz for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is positively wild! Ever since Sony and Marvel Studios started hyping fans up for the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s latest big-screen adventure, we’ve seen a non-stop deluge of apparel, popcorn buckets, and billboards for the record-breaking superhero film. However, someone in charge of distributing posters did not include the Famous Players theater in Prince George, British Columbia, on the list. So, instead of displaying the film’s official posters, an illustration by employee Drake Landon, inspired by the Spooder-Man meme, went up instead.

“Spooder-Man” Goes Viral

Images of Landon’s poster are now going viral, and the art is outright hilarious! As you can see, thanks to the image posted below, the poster reads, “Sorry! We never recieved the real posters! Sorry for any inconviniences!” Oh, and before you ask, no, I did not misspell it. That’s exactly how it appears on Landon’s poster. Classic!

According to Landon, the response to his Brand New Day poster has been “very unexpected,” and he’s “kinda still not realizing how big it is.” Landon adds, “It’s crazy that my art has gone that far for something so simple.” He also says that “the inspiration for it was the ‘Spooder-man’ meme that was popular around in the 2010s.”

Meanwhile, Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Records

The timing for Landon’s poster to go viral could not be better, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to make headlines, this time for crossing the $700 million mark at the domestic box office on Wednesday. While that’s cool, it’s even more impressive, considering it’s the fastest film ever to cross that benchmark in 13 days. Before Brand New Day, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Endgame tied as the fastest movies to hit $700M, all doing so in 16 days.

The collective response to Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been nothing short of amazing, with the sequel making money hand over fist as it rises through the box office ranks. I’ve already seen the film, but my wife and friends haven’t, so I’m likely to go again by the end of this coming weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see it again, but I also want to catch a screening of The End of Oak Street, which is getting rave reviews, including from our own Chris Bumbray. With D23 happening on Friday, I’ll plan my theater trips wisely.

Update: In classic corporate fashion, management at the Famous Players location has since pulled Landon’s hand-drawn masterpiece from display to keep from ruffling any feathers over at Marvel and Sony. Here’s hoping Landon hung onto the original—with this much internet fame, he could easily frame it and auction it off online for a small fortune!
