Word out of Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company has it that the Spierig Bros. have been tapped to direct the sci-fi fantasy sequel to the 1982 film THE DARK CRYSTAL. Get this, they’re thinking of calling it POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL, surely referring to the supremacy of 3D. Ugh…
Touted as one of the most ambitious cinematic undertakings in Australia’s history, POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL will be exhibited in stereoscopic 3D, with a mixture of live action, Henson puppetry, old and new animation styles, as well as CGI. Omnilab’s Media arm, Ambiance Entertainment, will produce.
So what the hell’s the movie about, aside from all the technical dazzle? Here we go!

Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.
Okay, okay…not terrible. Not the first thing you think of when uttering AITH, but a dying sun always makes for an interesting sci-fi scenario. Hopefully the Brothers Spierig do this sucka justice!
Here’s what the bros. had to say after landing the gig:
Michael: “We feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in telling this story with the same meticulous care that Jim Henson and Frank Oz gave the 1982 original.”
Peter: “This is a chance to take the world of puppetry into the modern age by using modern techniques (like motion capture CGI) and the tried and true methods (like puppetry and animatronics) to create a one hundred percent real world that is unique to The Dark Crystal.”
