Those looking forward to Spike Lee‘s take on Park Chan-Wook’s OLDBOY are going to have to wait one month longer, as the studio has delayed the release a month, shifting from it’s original release date of October 25, 2013 to November 27, 2013. No reason was given for the shift, but it’s a strange move, as it was running unopposed in its original slot, but is now going up against some decent competiton, including Scott Cooper‘s OUT OF THE FURNACE (limited), BLACK NATIVITY, Disney’s FROZEN, and the Jason Statham actioner HOMEFRONT.
I’m not sure if they studio wants to capitalize on Thanksgiving audiences (likely) or they’re concerned about it being lost in the abyss of October, but it’s a risky move. As a huge fan of the original, I’m actually quite intrigued to see Spike Lee‘s version (and it’s a rare thing indeed for me to want to see a Spike Lee film these days), especially with Brolin in the lead and Copley as the “villain.” Based on the trailer, it looks pretty solid, but it was always going to be a tough sell to average moviegoers no matter when it opened.
OLDBOY, starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson will know hammer down on November 27, 2013.
