Star Wars fans launch a campaign for Disney to film a Han Solo sequel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Because the mission to exhaust everything Star Wars is neverending, last week fans of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY launched a campaign calling for Disney to make a sequel to the 2018 space-fairing spin-off feature. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Solo quite a bit, actually. In truth, I'd place it high above the franchise's other side-piece, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, any day of the week. Be that as it may, this article isn't about what I want, it's about what a select group of fans are clamoring for as the Star Wars universe continues to expand on the big screen.

By the time that SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY had exited theaters last year, the scruffy nerf-herding spin-off banked $392.7 million credits worldwide. Obviously, when compared to STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI's $1.3 billion dollar take, Disney was reluctant to launch plans for a sequel. While some fans blamed Disney's lackluster marketing campaign for the project's under-performance at the box office, others pointed a crooked finger at the film's production woes as a major deterrent to getting asses into the seats. As talk of the desire for a sequel reached a fever pitch last Thursday, fans of Alden Ehrenreich's Solo established the #MakeSolo2Happen hashtag, which managed to become the second-most trending topic on the social platform that day. As a sign of perhaps compromise – which is not something you hear of too often with regards to Star Wars fandom – many expressed that they would be content with Han getting his own television series on Disney+ as opposed to a all-out sequel on the big screen.

For now, Disney has no plans to set a Solo sequel into production. Instead, the studio is giving GAME OF THRONES showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss a chance to follow J.J. Abrams' STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER with their own film in the Star Wars pantheon. Considering how the final season of HBO's swords and sorcery drama was received by many of the shows fans, Star Wars enthusiasts have been understandably shaken by the company's decision.

Perhaps all hope is not lost for a Solo sequel, on account of fans voicing their interest to follow the character onto another adventure, though for now it looks as if we'll have to be content with whatever Benioff and Weiss cook up. I wish them luck, as the Star Wars fandom is a rabid one, and I can't help but feel like the duo are willfully walking into a trap.
