While the world awaits Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter (slated for May 28, 2027), Spider-Man director Jon Watts and screenwriter Simon Kinberg are actively developing what could be the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga. Watts, who previously directed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy and co-created Skeleton Crew, is returning to the Star Wars franchise to helm the project.
From Spider-Man to a Galaxy Far, Far Away
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg has been crafting a new trilogy since late 2024. The first film—potentially Episode X—aims to continue the primary saga (Episodes I–IX) and will likely incorporate Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. While the project is still in development and awaits an official greenlight from Disney, sources indicate it is already well underway.
After setting the box office on fire with No Way Home‘s $1.9B+ global total, Watts directed Brad Pitt and George Clooney in the conspiracy thriller Wolfs. He also shot two episodes of the Jeff Bridges spy thriller, The Old Man, and two episodes of Skeleton Crew, the coming-of-age Star Wars series. Curiously, Watts’ director’s chair is vacant at the moment. Could it be that a new chapter in the Skywalker Saga is his next project?
While the Kinberg/Watts project remains in development, Lucasfilm’s next big-screen venture is already well underway, as production for Star Wars: Starfighter wrapped earlier this year. Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy) leads a star-studded lineup for the film, which includes Flynn Gray (Wednesday), Matt Smith (Caught Stealing), Mia Goth (Pearl), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (The Essex Serpent), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen), and Amy Adams (Man of Steel).
