Starsky and Hutch, TV reboot

Starsky and Hutch will be headed back to the streets as THR has reported that Fox Entertainment is developing a reboot of the iconic 1970s cop show.

The modern “reimagining” of Starsky and Hutch will follow two female detectives this time around, Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson. “They solve crimes in the offbeat town of Desert City while staying true to their friendship, their awesomeness, and somehow also trying to unravel the mystery behind who sent their fathers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn’t commit,” reads THR’s description. Sam Sklaver (Prodigal Son) and Elizabeth Peterson (The Resident) are behind the potential series, but Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn told THR that he expects to see at least two scripts before he makes his choice.

The original series starred David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser and ran on ABC from 1975-79. Zipping around in a bright red Ford Gran Torino, the pair solved crimes throughout the fictional town of Bay City with a supporting cast that included Antonio Fargas as Huggy Bear and Bernie Hamilton as Captain Harold C. Dobey. The series later received a tongue-in-cheek action comedy movie in 2004 starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, with Snoop Dogg playing Huggy Bear.

You might remember that James Gunn was once developing a Starsky and Hutch series for Amazon, but he stressed at the time that it would not be a reboot. “This would NOT be a reboot or a remake, but a continuation of the original series that would deconstruct the buddy cop show in a fun way,” Gunn said. “Like Guardians of the Galaxy did with the space opera, it would honor the genre while turning it inside-out. And it would definitely not be a spoof like the 2004 Starsky & Hutch movie – it would be gritty and driven by both characters and high stakes. I came up with a lot of wild ideas – things I can’t go into quite yet – but stuff that got me excited about the prospect of creating a TV show.” Amazon chose not to move ahead with Gunn’s version of the project.
