After almost twenty years in development hell, a film adaptation of Steve Alten's 1997 shark thriller novel MEG has finally made it into production. That's such a huge accomplishment that I don't really mind that Warner Bros. has just delayed the release of the film five months, pushing it back from March 2, 2018 to August 10, 2018. Fans have waited so long to see this movie happen, an extra five months doesn't seem like such a big deal.
MEG would have been going up against a mysterious Fox/Marvel project on March 2nd. It will share August 10th with the SCARFACE remake.
Directed by Jon Turteltaub from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and James Vanderbilt, MEG stars Jason Statham as a
Navy deep-sea diver whose military career ended in disgrace after his team encountered a living Megalodon, a prehistoric ancestor of the shark believed to reach up to 60 feet in length. With his team destroyed by the beast, he soon is offered a chance at redemption when an international underwater observation program led by Chinese scientists encounters the same beast after a volcanic eruption released it from an underwater trench into open water.
Statham is joined in the cast by Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Li Bingbing, and Jessica McNamee.
MEG will be released in 3D and IMAX, which seems quite fitting for a movie about a giant shark. I just hope it will be better than JAWS 3D.
