I sure do hope you enjoyed Stephen Lang's performance as Colonel Miles Quaritch in James Cameron's AVATAR, because we just got word that Lang is set to return as the villain for all four of the planned sequels!
Recently, while participating in an interview with Empire, Cameron told the entertainment news outlet that, “The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf—er through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”
Apparently, it's going to take more than a few specialized arrows to take Colonel Miles Quaritch out of the AVATAR loop. Before this interview, we'd already been informed that Lang would return to the franchise, we just didn't know of in what capacity. In talking more about the sequels, Cameron also revealed that the second, third, fourth, and fifth films would serve as a type of "family saga" in regard to Jake (Same Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their offspring. Additionally, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis have recently signed on the sci-fi blockbuster, and the legendary Sigourney Weaver will also return for AVATAR 2.
If you ask me, it's a rather interesting gamble to feature the same villain throughout this entire franchise. There's a part of that feels as if having to oppose the same threat for every sequel would grow stale, and perhaps rather quickly. With that said, I've no idea what Cameron's plans are for this franchise, and I must admit that I'm more than a little curious. It's easy for me to dismiss AVATAR nowadays, what with all of the other visually spectacular films that've screened since the original's 2009 release. But the fact remains that, when it came out, I had a damn good time running around with the blue cat people in Pandora.
