Welp, this is what it's come to, folks. Netflix has announced that Steve Carell is joining forces, once again, with THE OFFICE Emmy-winning series developer/executive Greg Daniels for SPACE FORCE, a new workplace comedy that aims to take the piss out of President Donald Trump's unlikely initiative.
Co-created by Carell and Daniels, SPACE FORCE will find Carell as part of a group of people tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services…Space Force. In addition to starring in the upcoming comedy, Carell will also executive produce alongside Daniels and 3 Art's Howard Klein. Furthermore, Daniels will also act as the program's showrunner.
On June 18, 2018, President Turmp announced that he'd instructed the Department of Defense and the Pentagon to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces. Not long after the reveal of Trump's latest decree, Vice President Mike Pence explained to confunded citizens that the purpose of the new branch would be to defend satellites from attack and perform other space-related tasks … or something. Naturally, the initiative will need authorization and funding from Congress, which the Democratic party now holds a majority over of after the recent mid-term elections. With Dems not seeing much of a point to the lofty (and costly) project, Space Force is likely to never experience lift-off.
If you ask me, the premise sounds perfect for Carell and Daniels' particular brand of cringy comedy, and could be a fine alternative for all of those still hoping for an Office reunion.
