Soderbergh finds a bigger boat
What is there to say about Jaws that hasn’t already been said? Here we are in the summer movie season and Steven Spielberg‘s 1975 film changed the landscape of the movie world as the first summer blockbuster. Spielberg’s recent Disclosure Day shows that the famous filmmaker will still dabble in big genre films. However, for a director like Steven Soderbergh, who not only loves the film Jaws, but sees that movie as a life-changing moment that sent him on his path to his career — how do you pay tribute to such a film in a way that hasn’t been done before?
It was recently announced that Soderbergh was working on a Jaws-related project called Production 02074 and it has now recently been unveiled that this project is a tribute to the making of Jaws. People will be able to view the production of the movie, not as a book, but through an app.
Production 02074
Though it isn’t exactly a book or a digital book, for those who are curious what the Production 02074 app does, it’s like an interactive book of sorts. Soderbergh launched the app in the Apple Store late on June 20, with an app for Android tablets he expects will be available later this week.
Per Deadline, Soderbergh built an app “specifically to accomplish what is an inventive compilation of still images from the film along with Spielberg’s observations written in the production log and Soderbergh’s analysis of why Jaws is a singular cinematic accomplishment that moved him so much as a youth that he saw it 31 times in a theater.”
Production 02074 was created so that Soderbergh could break down what made Jaws the movie that it is by showing the viewer, not just by telling the viewer. Soderbergh would also spend the conclusion of the app by revealing all the lessons he learned from the movie and Spielberg himself wrote an epilogue to close it out in reflection.
The app costs $24.99, with all the proceeds going to an animal charity.
What do you think of this app? Will you be purchasing it as a fan of Jaws? Let us know what you think if you’ve checked it out.
