Strange Adventures: Kevin Smith says the HBO Max series is canceled after years of development

Warner Bros. Discovery is in slash-and-burn mode as the two companies merge to become a unified entertainment hub. The latest project to be placed on the sacrificial altar is Kevin Smith‘s Strange Adventures series. While taping his Hollywood Babylon podcast, Smith detailed the defunct series he’d been working on with Bermanti Productions for HBO Max.

Smith said the studio reached out to him roughly two years ago to collaborate for Strange Adventures. He was given a list of characters he could choose from for a DC anthology project. He chose Jimmy Olsen and Bizarro, with the story revolving around Bizarro’s origin. The studio granted him $16 to $20 million for the episode. On Hollywood Babylon, Smith said he was talking with Nicolas Cage to play Bizarro, but Cage wasn’t a lock yet. Then, before David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery shelved DC’s Batgirl movie, Smith received a call saying his Strange Adventures series was canceled. Smith also noted that DC’s Green Lantern series at HBO Max is dead, though this is not definitive.

Meanwhile, James Gunn says Peacemaker Season 2 is still moving forward, but nothing has been said about his other live-action DC projects. Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery say they’re looking to reboot the DCEU with a 10-year plan similar to Marvel’s MCU approach. While fans have no idea what that looks like, more cancelations may be coming.

In DC’s latest reboot of Strange Adventures, Eisner-winning writer Tom King and artists Evan “Doc” Shaner and Mitch Gerads bring an epic tale to the forefront. Adam Strange is the hero of Rann, a man famous throughout the galaxy for his bravery and honor. After leading his adopted home to victory in a great planetary war, Adam and his wife Alanna retire to Earth, where they are greeted by cheers, awards, and parades. But not all is as happy and nice as it seems, as the decisions Adam made during battles on Rann come back to haunt his family and threaten the entire DC Universe. And now a surprise DC hero will have to choose between saving Adam Strange and saving the world.

What do you think about Smith’s Strange Adventures project getting canned? Is the DCEU in good hands with David Zaslav, or is he already mucking it up? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
