Rumors of a SUSPIRIA remake have been circulating for at least five years now. Director David Gordon Green (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) has been trying to get it off the ground since 2009. Today comes official word that production on the remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 classic will begin this September.
The original SUSPIRIA centers on Suzie, a bright and ambitious American student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a fellow student is brutally murdered and several other cruel and strange homicides disrupt the once quiet life on campus, Suzie realizes that the academy may be a front for a more menacing organization.
I am a huge Argento fan and would love to see the quality of his current work match his output from the seventies. I am sure there are many fans out there crying foul of this news. I used to feel the same way, but I am beginning to have hope for this project. If Green can direct a film that is cinematically daring as the original while still retaining the core story, at the very least it would open up the audience to seek out the original.
Crime Scene Pictures will be producing the film. They are predominantly known for producing reality television, which is always a big red flag. But David Gordon Green has made some good movies so far. I will keep my hopes tempered for now and see what happens.
