As we slowly settle into winter and the folks over in Westeros prophecise its return, we now have a solid premiere date to mark our calendars and a teaser poster for the third season of the hit show on HBO.  Based on the “Song of Ice and Fire” novels by author George R.R. Martin, the fantasy series follows a series of characters emblazoned in the battle for the throne of the fictional realm of Westeros, where sex, violence, and betrayal are used in every possible way to secure their footing.

The third season is splitting the third book in the series, A Storm of Swords, into two seasons, and there’s much to be excited about for that.  The amount of jaw-dropping events that transpire is enough to warrant as much time as possible and I’m beyond stoked to see it all unfold.  Fans of the series will know the events I speak of, but for those that don’t, avoid spoilers at all costs.

Here’s the poster:

Season three is currently filming with the surviving castmembers returning to their previous roles.  Besides being a big fan of the books, I love that Game of Thrones follows the adaptations closely, rather than changing things up almost completely like AMC’s The Walking Dead does.  They are both strong shows, but in terms of integrity to the material, Game of Thrones has the edge.

HBO’s Game of Thrones season three premieres on March 31, 2013.
