UPDATE: The opening box office weekend for The Batman came in even higher than initially reported. Estimates had the opening coming in at $128.5 million but Sunday business was much better than anticipated and now the actual figure stands at $134 million. This is the second-best opening of the pandemic era behind 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, per The Hollywood Reporter. The worldwide opening now comes in at $254 million and it’s possible the international figures will also soar higher when those final numbers are released later today.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Batman exceeded box office tracking with a robust debut to make it the first big tentpole hit of 2022.

The Batman grossed $128.5 million this weekend which represents Warner Bros.’ best opening weekend since Joker in 2019 and the studio’s best showing during the pandemic era. If WarnerMedia needed more proof that their day-and-date streaming strategy wasn’t so smart, this is it. Tracking had the film debuting in the $115 million range so this is a wonderful start for a film that seems to be very well-received by the masses. The Batman scored a stellar “A-” CinemaScore from opening night audiences which indicates that word of mouth is particularly strong. Internationally, The Batman opened to $120 million which brings its global haul to $248.5 million.

Falling to second place is Uncharted with a gross of $11 million. That’s a drop of 52% which was to be expected in the wake of The Batman opening this weekend. The good news is that Uncharted has joined the century club this weekend with a domestic total of $100.2 million. Overseas the film added another $17.4 million which brings its international gross to $171.3 million.

In third we find Channing Tatum’s Dog with another solid hold at $6 million. That’s a decline of 41% and it shows that Dog is benefitting from solid word of mouth since making its debut. To date, Dog has grossed $40 million at the domestic box office and a $50 million+ final gross is still in its sights.

Still showing solid holds in fourth place is Spider-Man: No Way Home with a gross of $4.4 million. That’s a slim decline of 24% which is impressive since it was facing direct competition from comic book fans for The Batman this weekend. The film has now brought its domestic total to $786.4 million and after adding an additional $4 million from overseas markets, the film brings its global haul to a staggering $1.86 billion.

Rounding out the top five is Death on the Nile with a gross of $2.7 million. That’s a drop of 39% which is one of its better holds since opening over Super Bowl weekend. Death on the Nile has now grossed $37 million at the domestic box office but its best showings have been overseas. The film earned an additional $5.1 million from international markets which brings its global tally to $115.1 million.
