The Golden Schmoes: Where are they?

Some of you may be wondering when we’re going to reveal the nominees for this year’s edition of The Golden Schmoes. This would have marked our 20th edition of the Schmoes (aka the JoBlo Movie Awards), our very own answer to the increasingly silly Golden Globes and of course, the less silly but still divisive Oscars. Read more about what the Golden Schmoes are right HERE.

Here’s the thing though – 2020 was not a good year for movies (or much else, for that matter). Or, at least, it was a terrible, terrible year for blockbusters and tentpoles, the kind of crowd-pleasing fare that usually highlight our The Golden Schmoes nominees (see our previous winners HERE). The main culprit is COVID-19, as virtually all of the movies we were psyched to see in 2020, got pushed into later this year and beyond (I still wonder when I’ll finally get to see No Time To Die).

As such, we’ve decided to shelve the awards for a year.

Now, we don’t mean to suggest that 2020 was a total wash for movies. There were some good-to-great ones like Sound of Metal, Nomadland, Palm Springs and more. But again, none of these were the kinds of movies that normally get nominated for the Golden Schmoes by our readers. Remember that our nominees are chosen by you and after that, our winners are also chosen by you!

Rather than do what the rest of Hollywood seems to be doing – pushing the eligibility deadline to February, we've decided to simply sit this one year out. Take a break, if you will. Next year, you’ll once again be able to vote for all your favorites from the past year and depending how things go, maybe we'll cover both 2020 and 2021…we'll see! Here’s hoping things turn around and at least we’ll get some quality tentpoles by end of this year. But really….nobody knows.

All that to say, the Golden Schmoes WILL be back as we continue to the tradition of allowing actual movie fans vote for their favorites, rather than stuffy critics or the insanely out of touch Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Sia's Music for best comedy/musical? The Prom? Really?). Until then, enjoy HBO MAX, AMAZON PRIME, NETFLIX, DISNEY+, APPLE TV, etc and so forth….
