Last we heard, Fox’s DC inspired television series GOTHAM would possibly have a role for a young Bruce Wayne. Now, we know that Wayne will be a central figure in the James Gordon-centric origin series. While the original description of the show was that of a police procedural that followed Gordon as he started as a beat cop in Batman’s home town. But, like the CW series ARROW, GOTHAM is not going to ignore the countless characters that inhabit the fictional metropolis. According to FOX chairman Kevin Reilly, they will be integral to GOTHAM.
“The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12-year-old) until he puts on a cape (in the finale), he said. Also on tap are the Ridler, Catwoman, the Penguin. “We will see how they get to become what they are as Gotham is teethering on the edge,” Reilly said. “It is an operatic soap with a larger than life quality.”

GOTHAM was already given a series commitment by FOX which means at least one full season of the show is bound to air. The comment from Reilly that the end of the series will be when Bruce Wayne becomes Batman is similar to the series SMALLVILLE that ended with Clark Kent becoming Superman. What excites me most about GOTHAM is that we will see the gallery of rogues we have come to expect but in a very different light. Every DC villain has been given an origin story, sometimes more than one, and this would be a very cool way of bringing them all to life in a single continuity.
GOTHAM will select a roster of writers in mid-February for a likely Fall premiere date.
