Getting together with family can be difficult, especially if everyone around the dinner table is going through their share of drama at the time. In the trailer for The Humans, Erik Blake has gathered three generations of his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter’s apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare.

This biting, funny, and haunting film from writer-director Stephen Karam, marks his feature debut. The story is adapted from his Tony Award-winning play, and a cast of A-list stars have assembled to bring the emotional tale to life on screen. The Humans stars Steven Yeun (Minari, Mayhem), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart, American Crime Story), Richard Jenkins (The Cabin in the Woods, The Shape of Water), June Squibb (Nebraska, About Schmidt), and Jane Houdyshell (Little Women, Garden State).

The Humans premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, where it currently garnered an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Judging from the trailer, the claustrophobic setting helps create an intimate atmosphere that brings us up close and personal with the characters and their many problems. I’m also curious to know if the haunting is real or merely a reflection of the group’s fragile energy swirling within the limited space. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started watching the trailer, but now I’m adding this movie to my list of things to watch.

According to the trailer, The Humans is “coming soon,” so be sure to keep an eye out for updates.
