We're going to need a bigger Earth. If you thought that the alien ships from the original INDEPENDENCE DAY were massive, then the upcoming sequel will almost certainly challenge your definition of the word. INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE will pick up many years after the events of the first film and find that the nations of the Earth have joined together to develop a planetary defense system using recovered alien technology, but as we've witnessed in the trailers, that may not be enough to save us. Director Roland Emmerich spoke with Entertainment Weekly and revealed the size of the alien's new Mothership.

The Mothership comes to Earth, and it spans the Atlantic Ocean.

That certainly is on the large side, and while I'm no big city country scientist, I'd imagine that an object that size would present us with a few gravitational problems. Despite the high stakes, Emmerich says that the now unified peoples of Earth may stand a chance, “I always say, it’s a post-war world. We call [the first movie] the War of ‘96. Which we won! But it’s also kind of clear that they were going to come back. So we’ve stayed unified.” Emmerich went on to say that he views INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE as a "mildly optimistic" alternative vision of recent history, saying "in these days when our world is so not united, this is a very poignant thing to do in a movie. To show how much we can accomplish.

But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
