2021 Emmy nominees include The Mandalorian, The Boys, & WandaVision

The nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced and fanboys everywhere can rejoice that genre TV is being represented in a big way with some high-profile nominations.

The big pleasant surprise of the day is that both The Mandalorian and The Boys will be competing for Best Drama series. They will be joined by Bridgerton, The Crown, The Handmaid's Tale, Lovecraft Country, Pose, and This Is Us. This is the second year in a row that The Mandalorian has scored a Best Drama Series nomination at the Emmys and this is the first for Amazon's The Boys. It's also interesting to see critical darling Lovecraft Country in the mix since HBO just recently decided not to move forward with a second season. Also, as has been the case since its debut, This Is Us is the lone representative for network TV which is a compliment to This Is Us but also another sign of how network TV has faded from this category.

In the Best Comedy category, you will see more fan favorites like Cobra Kai, Ted Lasso, and The Flight Attendant. They are joined by Black-ish, Emily In Paris, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, and Pen15. Black-ish is the lone representative for network TV on the comedy side as the rest of the nominees all comes from the world of streaming.

Marvel represents for limited television with WandaVision scoring nominations for Best Limited Series, Lead Actress, Limited Series, Movie or Anthology for Elizabeth Olsen, and Best Lead Actor, Limited Series, Movie or Anthology for Paul Bettany. 

When it was all said and done, Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian tied with the most nominations with 24. Also, according to "Deadline", among platforms, the fight is between HBO and Netflix, with the combined HBO and HBO Max edging the streaming giant in total nominations 130-129. Disney+ saw 71 nominations today while NBC was fourth overall with 46, a strong showing for a broadcast network in the age of streaming.
