The Maniac Cop remake sales art has been detained from Nicolas Winding Refn

MANIAC COP is getting ready to stalk the streets once more, courtesy of UNIVERSAL SOLDIER director John Hyams under the watchful eye of producers Nicolas Winding Refn and original director Bill Lustig. The new sales art, which debuted at AFM, combines the gritty urban horror of the Lustig flick with the neon slickness customary to Refn's productions.

Basically, we've upgraded from the burnt-out 80's New York to the polished criminal underbelly of DRIVE. Personally, I can't think of two better aesthetics to merge. And if we have to remake anything, MANIAC COP has enough room to grow that it's not such an egregious offense like, say… ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. Check it out below!

The screenplay, written by Ed Brubaker, is based on the story of the original 1988 film:

Innocent people are brutally killed on the streets of New York by a uniformed police officer. A young cop, Jack Forrest finds himself marked as the chief suspect after his wife is murdered. As Lieutenant Frank McCrae investigates, the death toll rises and he suspects a mysterious police cover-up. This "maniac" cop must be stopped, but it might not be so easy. He seems inhuman, and ready to take on the entire police force, hell-bent on revenge!

MANIAC COP has the right to begin filming this Spring in New York City.
