The Munsters? Dracula? Rob Zombie and Sylvester McCoy team for horror comedy

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Rob Zombie has always been open about the fact that he is a huge fan of the classic sitcom The Munsters (watch it HERE). He has written songs inspired by the show, included a clip from The Munsters in House of 1000 Corpses, and said he has watched every episode of the series "at least 17 times". He even recorded a Blu-ray commentary for the film Munster, Go Home! with cast member Butch Patrick. (Buy the Blu-ray HERE.) And yet, I would still be shocked if Universal has entrusted Zombie to write and direct a new feature film version of The Munsters, as the website Murphy's Multiverse recently reported.

According to the site, Zombie regulars Jeff Daniel Phillips and Sheri Moon Zombie have been cast as Herman and Lily Munster, and they'll be joined in the cast by Daniel Roebuck, Jorge Garcia, Richard Brake, and Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson. They say that filming will begin in Budapest, Hungary in May.

Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting weren't able to confirm or debunk this Munsters rumor, but they did dig up evidence that Zombie is indeed going to be filming a horror comedy in Hungary. This information comes from veteran actor Sylvester McCoy, who wasn't named as a cast member by Murphy's Multiverse but has mentioned the project in multiple interviews in recent months. The first mention came last September, when McCoy told SCREAM Magazine he had been cast in

a horror comedy which was supposed to be shot in Hungary but that has been put on hold. I can’t really say anything about that but it’s a film that Rob Zombie’s set to direct. So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with that project. Hopefully we’ll start to try making it again next year…"

In an interview published by The Sunday Post in December, McCoy was quoted as saying,

I’m due to go to Hungary in March to shoot a film for Rob Zombie, who’s asked me to be in his new movie. It’s a comedic Dracula film, and I’m playing Dracula’s butler."

Well, The Munsters does have a "comedic Dracula" sort of character, but would it have "Dracula's butler" in it?

And just last month, McCoy reiterated to Yahoo,

I’m doing a Rob Zombie film in Hungary."

So it looks pretty certain that Rob Zombie and Sylvester McCoy will soon be working on some kind of horror comedy in Hungary, but we'll have to wait and see if it's really going to have any connection to The Munsters. Zombie has packed so much vulgarity into his films up to this point, it's tough to imagine him switching gears into a sensibility that would be fitting for The Munsters.
