Watch out, world! The prettiest girls at the party have been cast for the CW's live-action Powerpuff Girls series. Lined up to kick butt while doling out one-liners are Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dove Cameron (Descendants), and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill).
The Powerpuff Girls is a live-action series based on the original Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken. Written and executive produced by Juno’s Diablo Cody and Veronica Mars co-EP Heather Regnier, it is also exec produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden and comes from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros TV. Erika Kennair produces. Directing The Powerpuff Girls is Maggie Kiley, whose credits include shooting episodes for shows like The Gifted, Caring, Riverdale, Katy Keene, and Dr. Death, to name a few.
The series follows the trio Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crimefighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Bennet, known best for her role as Skye on all seven seasons of ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., will star as Blossom Utonium. Though she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms.
Cameron, who starred as Mal for Disney's Descendants series, will play Bubbles Utonium. Bubbles’ sweet-girl disposition won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us as well as herself.
Singer-Songwriter Perrault will take on the role of the attitudinal Buttercup Utonium. Buttercup was the rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.
While I'm not entirely sure about the concept of bringing the Powerpuff Girls to live-action, I do think the CW has assembled a stellar cast for the pilot. I'm also intrigued by Diablo Cody serving as one head of the show's creative hydra. With projects like Juno, Jennifer's Body, Young Adult, and Tully to her name, I can't think of anyone better to give McCraken's ass-kicking trio a worthwhile makeover.
