The Rock is making a wrestling comedy with Stephen Merchant

So…is this the first time that The Rock is doing a film that's wrestling-related at all? *checks imdb*. Huh. Seeing as it feels like a million years ago since he was the "People's Champion" on WWE, it does seem kinda strange that it took this long to do a wrestling-type film project (even though, admittedly, he's done some recent guest appearances on the show).

This is all to say that The Rock is producing a wrestling dramedy, teaming up with THE OFFICE co-creator Stephen Merchant, who'll write and direct the project. Oh my God, seeing The Rock do cringe-comedy sounds amazing.

Anyway, the film will be based on the British documentary THE WRESTLERS: FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY, which according to Deadline was about:

Reformed gangster and former wrestler Ricky, his wife Julia, daughter Saraya and son Zak who make a living performing in tiny venues across the country. Ricky and Julia want a better life for their children and when brother and sister get the chance to audition for the WWE, it seems the family dream is coming true and all their troubles will be solved. However, Saraya and Zak are about to learn that becoming a WWE Superstar demands more than they ever imagined possible as athletes and siblings.

The Rock will reportedly have a role in the film, alongside Lena Headey and Nick Frost.

Honestly, though, what gets me excited for the project is in fact Stephen Merchant's involvement. I love his shows, and think he's hilarious, so can't wait to see what his collaboration with The Rock will be like.

No release date as of yet, but we'll keep you posted.
