Last week the stellar news broke that the Spierig Brothers would be directing POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL (see the original article HERE), sequel to the beloved 80s fantasy film starring a bunch of puppets from Jim Henson’s Workshop.
Now that the word is out, Michael and Peter Spierig are out talking about what they have planned for POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL, as well as why they chose this particular project. They recently sat down with ComingSoon.net and spilled this little bit of info. as to what we can expect:
This [film] will certainly have scary elements to it. It’s not a horror film by any means, its just got a really solid mythology and solid idea. There are so many great characters. Great new characters and some of the favorites from the previous film will return. It’s not a remake. It’s a continuing story and we use the world of the first film to go further.
“It’s not a horror film” just struck a dagger in my heart. Why the f*ck isn’t this a horror film? It’s from the directors of UNDEAD and DAYBREAKERS, a couple of dudes who happen to look alike who also happen to know how to make something scary. But not here, apparently…
I’m a bit disappointed, but I think it’ll end up being a little scarier than even the directors thought. The original is pretty freaky in some parts (until you realize it’s all just a bunch of effin’ puppets!), but maybe that’s just the 6 year old in me talking. Damn. I guess it wasn’t really all that scary after all.
