The Wait: First look at the new film from Rings and Before the Fall director F. Javier Gutiérrez

The director of the apocalyptic drama, Before the Fall, and 2017’s Rings, the sequel to the popular 2002 horror film, The Ring, is back with a first look at his new horror film. The Wait comes from F. Javier Gutiérrez and is being described as “a sinister folk horror tragedy that takes place in the dark, magic and forgotten Andalusian countryside — a place marked by ancestral traditions.” This new outing comes from his production company, Unfiled Films, and they have provided a sneak peek into the upcoming haunting film.

The official synopsis reads:

“Eladio (Victor Clavijo), hunting estate keeper, takes a bribe from a veteran hunter. Weeks later, his whole life falls apart. What looked like the opportunity of a lifetime, turns into a macabre descent to hell when he finds out that his misfortune might not be entirely by chance.”

This promises to be Gutierrez’s most intimate and brutal film, portraying the macabre descent into hell of a man who suffered the tragic loss of his family. The dark folk tale touches on themes that include the nature of good and evil, punishment, pain, and guilt. The Wait will be produced by Nostromo (Buried), Spal Films (Before the Fall) and Unfiled Films (Gutierrez’s production company). The Spanish film stars Víctor Clavijo (Before the Fall), Ruth Díaz, and Pedro Casablanc (Almodovar’s Strange Way of Life). The Wait is bound to be one of the most disturbing Spanish films of 2023.

Being no stranger to creepy, graphic imagery, the new images from The Wait showcase a curious and haunting series of events. After dabbling in the waters of the American market, Gutiérrez returns to Spain for this folk tale. Javier’s filmography includes such genres as horror, sci-fi, and thrillers. The Spanish director was originally attached to the reboot of The Crow when that incarnation was slated to have Luke Evans in the leading role. That project would not come to fruition and next, Gutiérrez will be directing a supernatural thriller titled Home School that is set to star Charli D’Amelio.
