The Crow: FKA twigs joins Bill Skarsgard in reboot

A few days ago, it was announced that a reboot of The Crow (watch the original film HERE) is once again moving forward, this time with Bill Skarsgard (Stephen King’s It) attached to star as Eric Draven and Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) on board to direct. Now The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that Skarsgard is being joined in the cast by British singer FKA twigs.

Twigs is taking on the role of Draven’s girlfriend/fiancée… but don’t let that lead you to believe she won’t have much screen time in the film. Although all we saw of Draven’s fiancée in the first movie were brief flashbacks, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that the role has been boosted to a co-lead in this reboot. “It is unclear if the character never quite dies, perhaps returns in some supernatural form, or may even be a representation of the crow itself.”

Based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr, the first version of The Crow was directed by Alex Proyas and released in 1994. It had the following synopsis:

The night before his wedding, musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered by members of a violent inner-city gang. On the anniversary of their death, Eric rises from the grave and assumes the gothic mantle of the Crow, a supernatural avenger. Tracking down the thugs responsible for the crimes and mercilessly murdering them, Eric eventually confronts head gangster Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) to complete his macabre mission.

Following the production of three sequels (each about a different resurrected character), a remake was first announced in late 2008 and has been languishing in development hell ever since. Several screenwriters have come and gone, scripts have been written and scrapped, studios have gone bankrupt, and directors like Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and Francisco Javier Gutiérrez have all been involved along the way. Actors up for the lead role have included Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, and Jack Huston.

The version of The Crow that Sanders is going to direct with Skarsgard and twigs in the lead roles is expected to start filming in June, with production taking place in Prague and Munich. Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard) is writing the screenplay.

This take on The Crow is being produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman. Dan Farah serves as executive producer.
