In 1979, director Walter Hill – drawing inspiration from a novel by Sol Yurick, which was in turn inspired by Xenophon’s Anabasis – brought the world one of my favorite movies, the action thriller classic The Warriors. Tony Scott spent a portion of his last years developing a remake of The Warriors, but while that sort of project has yet to make into production, we are going to be getting a new take on the concept next year. It was announced three years ago that Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights) would be adapting the story into a musical stage play. Now, Playbill has shared the news that the Warriors musical will be coming to Broadway in 2027.
Warriors, with a book, music, and lyrics by Miranda and Eisa Davis (Bulrusher), will begin previews at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in March 2027. Licensed for the stage by Paramount Products & Experiences, the musical will officially open in April 2027.
What is The Warriors about?
Scripted by Hill and David Shaber, the 1979 film follows a Coney Island street gang that travels to a midnight summit in the Bronx, where the leader of the city’s most powerful gang proposes a citywide truce. When an assassin murders the leader and frames the Warriors, the group must fight their way thirty miles back to their home turf across hostile territories.
Directed by Jenny Koons and co-directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, the musical version of the story follows a fictitious New York City gang from Coney Island to the Bronx and back when they are framed for the murder of a respected gang leader, Cyrus. So, it sounds like Warriors is staying true to The Warriors, just with singing involved.
Produced by Thomas Kail, Miranda, Luis A. Miranda Jr., and Jeffrey Seller, Warriors will also feature scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Jason Crystal, projection design by Hana S. Kim, music supervision by Kurt Crowley, and orchestrations by Crowley, Scott Wasserman, and Mike Elizondo.
Miranda and Davis provided the following statement: “With Warriors, we take a fateful journey through New York City full of heart and grit as our characters fight to survive. Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can’t wait.“
As mentioned, and as noted by Playbill, a concept album gave us our first sample of this musical in 2024. That album was executive produced by Nas and produced by Mike Elizondo. It featured Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Kim Dracula, and more.
Tickets to the Broadway musical Warriors will go on sale in October. For now, you can visit the official site at WarriorsMusical.com.
