The Wolverine will journey to Japan after all

We reported not too long ago that director James Mangold would be taking his production of THE WOLVERINE down to Australia, even with the story itself being set in Japan. And considering the magic movies are capable of these days, it didn’t take much of a stretch for the imagination to conjure up various ways in which Mangold’s production team might make the Down Under look like Japan.

Yet it turns out that such steps imaginitive steps won’t quite be necessary.  “We’re doing the stage work in Australia,” says Fox CEO Tom Rothman, “[but] the location work will be in Japan.” It turns out that all of the delays arising from Hugh Jackman’s schedule and the loss of Darren Aronofsky and so on may have actually given Japan sufficient time to recover from its recent bevy of natural disasters that Rothman feels confident in shooting there.  “It’s set in Japan,” Rothman said further. “A great number of Japanese actors will be in it and it’s based on the very famous run of the comics… I can just tell you on behalf of [Jackman], his goal is to make the ultimate, bad ass, berserker rage Wolverine.”

I’m glad that Jackman’s goal stands so close to the comics and our collective hearts. I think the bigger question at this point if that’s really what you’ll let him do, Mr. Tom Rothman.  Here’s to hoping.
