There was almost a film version of Luke Cage directed by Quentin Tarantino with Laurence Fishburne starring

Quentin Tarantino has never been shy about his love of comics. In fact, one of my favorite monologues is in KILL BILL VOL. 2, when the late David Carradine talks about the mythology of Superman.

While each of us secretly dreams of our director/comic film collaboration, not until recently did one happen with Joss Whedon taking on THE AVENGERS. Though it wasn’t entirely surprising, it was interesting to hear that Tarantino once had plans to possibly do a big screen version of Luke Cage.

This is what the director told MTV News, “After ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ I had considered doing a ‘Luke Cage, Hero for Hire’ movie. [Producer] Ed Pressman owned the rights at that time, and we talked about it,” he told us. “I talked to Larry Fish [Laurence Fishburne] about being Luke Cage, and he really liked that idea. Then I ended up writing ‘Pulp Fiction.'”

Since then, Tarantino hasn’t really found any comic material that he wanted to jump on. Perhaps instead, he will go his own way, “My feeling is if I wanted to do something like that, I’d want to create the superhero myself.” But what about doing another short for SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR? “I think it’s all Robert. He hasn’t gotten in touch with me about anything, so probably not.”

If you’d like to watch the interview for yourself, check it out below. I’ve also included the scene from KILL BILL 2.
