This first look at Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers evokes Jurassic Park

As a fan of animated films, I was going to write off CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS due to the cheap looking animation in the trailer. But, when I saw it I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. Obviously not faithful to the children’s book, CLOUDY had enough humor for adults as it did for kids. Plus, Bruce Campbell, so I was going to end up seeing it no matter what. The sequel, CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS, has been on my radar for a while. Now we get our first look at the style the new film will be going for.

CLOUDY 2 will follow Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), whose character boasts a reformed relationship with his father (James Caan) and can now be found working for his idol, Chester V at the Live Corp Company, alongside the best and brightest inventors in the world.

Hader explains that the film picks up shortly after the original “It’s created these living food creatures that have basically taken over Flint’s home, the island where he lives. That island is kind of like JURASSIC PARK.” The punny food-animal hyrids, or food-imals, include the likes of tacodiles, fruit cockatiels, cucumbirds, bananostriches, flamangoes, wildabeets and watermelophants.

The image above boasts the surreal feel the movie will go for, a major asset in the original. Directors Phil Lord and
Christopher Miller, fresh from the success of 21 JUMP STREET, return to produce the sequel. Most of the original cast is returning, including Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Neil Patrick Harris, Benjamin Bratt, and Will Forte along with newcomers Terry Crews and Kristen Schaal.

CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS opens on September 27, 2013.
