While I have no doubts that the larger demographic of people who watch SpongeBob are made up of the younger folks, I've always had my sneaking suspicions that the show was written for those a little bit older (and probably under the influence) in mind. The creators were nice enough to completely knock suspicion into certainty when they cooked up a SpongeBob poster mocking FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. They didn't stop there, as you'll find a few in the vein of TERMINATOR: GENISYS and JURASSIC WORLD.

Take a look:

It’s kinda blowing my mind that the first SpongeBob film opened 11 years ago. Even then the show was a little after my time, but I checked out the movie with a mild curiosity and if they can top SpongeBob riding David Hasselhoff (so to speak), I’m sure at some point I’ll check out SPONGE OUT OF WATER. I’m not promising it’s going to be a sober affair, but then again, the trailer for the film feels like a Cartoon Network acid trip anyway.

THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER opens this Friday.
