Emily Mortimer, Max von Sydow and Jackie Earle Haley have signed on to star in the upcoming Martin Scorsese film SHUTTER ISLAND. They join the already cast Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson. The film follows a detective and his partner (DiCaprio and Ruffalo) who head to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient. Mortimer will play Rachel Solando, the escapee loose on the island. Von Sydow will play Dr. Naehring, a psychiatrist on the island. Haley will star as George Noyce, a patient who may hold the key to the secret of Solando. With a cast like this, it would seem like you couldn’t go wrong but I’m still having some misgivings. The novel was entertaining but I worry about how its ending, and the resolution to the mystery, will translate to the screen. I can almost already hear people grousing about it. But I’ve got to believe Scorsese will handle it better than most have. I’d love to say more but can’t really without getting into a lot of spoilers. Filming on SHUTTER is expected to begin next week in Boston.
