It's been a long time coming but George Miller's anticipated fantasy-romance-drama Three Thousand Years of Longing is finally ready to roll camera. Filming for the frequently-delayed film is now underway in Sydney, Australia, under strict on-set Covid safety protocols. Shooting is expected to last for 62 days, with 20 of them already in the can. The production will adjourn for a brief recess over Christmas and will reassemble in the new year to finish filming. If all goes according to plan, Three Thousand Years of Longing will release in September 2021.
Leading Miller's next feature is Tilda Swinton (Suspiria, Snowpiercer) and Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation, The Losers), though plot details surrounding the project are currently being kept under wraps. Be that as it may, Miller has previously described the film as an "anti-Mad Max" with plenty of interiors and dialogue but also punctuated with action scenes. (via Deadline)
In talking about Miller's upcoming film, which is operating under an estimated $60M budget, producer Doug Mitchell says the sets are "some of the most spectacular I’ve ever seen,” and hinted that audiences will perhaps experience three thousand years worth of history once all is said and done. While fans are chomping at the bit for Miller to deliver the planned Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, they should note that Miller has assembled a killer team for his upcoming fantasy epic, including most of his Mad Max: Fury Road collaborators. This team includes Oscar-winning Cinematographer John Seale (The English Patient, Witness, Spanglish) as well as Oscar-winning Fury Road editor and longtime Miller partner Margaret Sixel. Oh, but it doesn't stop there. Oscar-winning hair and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, Oscar-winning set decorator Lisa Thompson, composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL, casting director Nikki Barrett, stunt coordinator Guy Norris, and prosthetics whizz Sheldon Wade are also along for the wild ride.
“George thinks this is the best crew he has ever worked with,” Mitchell told Deadline.
Oh, Miller, you had me at fantasy-romance-drama. With words like that and the promise of Swinton and Elba taking center screen, I can wait a couple of years for that Furiosa prequel. While others might not be too keen on waiting to return to the wastelands of the Mad Max universe, I say take your time, and do what feels right. After all, we're going to have a lot of movies thrown our way in 2021 after COVID delays, which will hopefully keep the internet dogs at bay while you work your magic.
