Toho to produce first new Godzilla film in 12 years

Japan's Toho has announced they are developing a new GODZILLA flick, their first since 2004's GODZILLA: FINAL WARS. A Toho staffer told THR with how well Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA performed at the box office earlier this year, now is as good of time as any to make a new movie featuring the King of the Monsters.

This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when? The licensing contract we have with Legendary places no restrictions on us making domestic versions.

No word on who will direct and star in the project, but production will begin this summer, and the film will likely be released sometime in 2016. And while it won't have a huge budget like the Gareth Edwards movie, "advances in CG will allow it to create a film that can stand alongside such productions," according to a release from Toho. Are you pumped the studio is working on a new GODZILLA?

Edwards' GODZILLA sequel is set to open on June 8, 2018.
