Tom Hanks & Halle Berry join Cloud Atlas, McAvoy & McKellan also rumored?

Last month we relayed a fascinating quote from Natalie Portman, which basically announced that she would play a small role in the big screen adaptation of CLOUD ATLAS. Even more fascinating was the tidbit that Tom Tykwer and Lana Wachowski would jointly direct. Now, with the recent cast additions, the film is really gonna be something to watch!

According to the trustiest of sites, IMDB, Tom Hanks and Halle Berry have been added to the CLOUD ATLAS cast. Hanks is slated to play Dr. Henry Goose, Berry to play Meronym. However, they will not join Natalie Portman, who was originally in line to play a character called Sonmi-451. As you’ve seen, she’s about scoop an Oscar and go on maternity leave for awhile…thus no CLOUD ATLAS for her.

But that’s not all! Sir Ian McKellan is “rumored” to play Timothy Cavendish, while James McAvoy is “rumored” to portray Adam Ewing in the sprawling sci-fi effort. If the reports end up being true, how rad would that aggregate cast be? Hanks, Berry, McAvoy and McKellan? Epic!

The novel consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel “goes back” in time, “closing” each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.
