Tom Hardy and his beard have been getting quite the workout this year. Between LOCKE and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, Hardy’s facial hair has almost become a character all it’s own. Now, the scruff returns with a New York accent alongside Noomi Rapace and the late James Gandolfini in the trailer for THE DROP.

Coming from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP (previously titled ANIMAL RESCUE) follows the gritty crime formula of Lehane’s other works in a smaller scale, more indie style setting. Still, Hardy and Gandolfini look to be in fine form for what could be a surprise hit.

The story focuses on Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy), a former criminal trying to straighten out his life as the bartender along with his cousin Marv (James Gandolfini) at a place that also serves as a money drop for local gangsters. Bob’s attempt at a normal life with a rescued pit bull puppy and his girlfriend (Noomi Rapace) falls apart when he finds himself in the center of a robbery gone wrong, committed by a thug (Matthias Schoenaerts).

Tom Hardy is a damn talented actor, even when he seems to be a more subdued performer than he has been in movies like BRONSON or THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Hardy has an intensity that can blow the top off a movie, much like Christian Bale in movies like THE FIGHTER. Here’s hoping we get to see some of that here.

THE DROP is slated to hit theaters on September 19th.
