Tom Holland didn’t know Jake Gyllenhaal was a part of The Devil All the Time

Tom Holland is showing a different side of himself in the new Netflix film THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME and he's earning raves for his performance. Most of us are used to the charming personality that he brings to his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU films but this movie has demonstrated layers and range that show his growth as an actor. Speaking of the MCU, Holland recently did an interview with "Entertainment Weekly" and disclosed that he didn't know that THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME had a bit of connection with his SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Funny story. When Jake and I were working together on Spidey 2, he was asking me what I was going to do next. I pitched him this movie and he was like, 'Wait a minute, I'm producing that movie.' And I was like, Well, I'm in that movie.' I guess someone had like messed up in the email and didn't tell us that each of us were part of the film."

THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME actually has other connections to the MCU. Sebastian Stan also stars in the film we all know he's our favorite Winter Soldier and he actually stepped in for Captain America, Chris Evans, when scheduling conflicts prevented him from doing the film. Stan actually got on board when Evans suggested him to director Antonio Campos. For Holland, working with Campos was a no-brainer because he was already a fan of his work before he ever got the script for this film:

"I met Antonio probably about two years before we started production. We went for a coffee, and I'd seen his film Christine and I was a massive fan of that, and I remember just saying to my agent, 'When this guy is going into production on something I'd love to get a look at the script, and if there's a role for me, I'd love to get an audition.'"

THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME is set in the south in the decades after the Second World War. The film sees Tom Holland in the role of Arvin Russell, a withdrawn young man with a strong moral center. Arvin grows up in a life of violence and neglect and his forced to take a violent stand against the people in his town who prey on himself and his stepsister. Holland really wanted to do the film because he thought playing Arvin would be a great way to challenge himself as an actor:

"[Arvin] is an angry kid. As an actor, I'm always looking for things to challenge me. I'm always looking for characters that are different and diverse and unique. I'm also looking for a director who I think can put me in a position I haven't been in before. So, I guess for me it was the challenge of doing a different accent, playing the rural class kid, a period film, a new director. Everything ticked the boxes for me."

In addition to Tom Holland and Sebastian Stan, the film features a star-studded cast that includes Bill Skarsgård, Jason Clarke, Riley Keough, Robert Pattinson, Eliza Scanlen, Harry Melling, Haley Bennett, and Mia Wasikowska. THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME is now streaming on Netflix and playing in select theaters.
