After dazzling audiences with its latest original feature, Hoppers, Pixar is returning to its trusty toy box for Toy Story 5, a sequel that finds Woody and the gang coming to terms with their place in a fast-moving world dominated by technology. Ahead of the animated film’s June 19 release, Entertainment Weekly debuted a gallery of new images (shown below), including a shot introducing Blaze, a new kid in the Toy Story franchise.
Mykal-Michelle Harris on Her New Toy Story 5 Character
“I would describe Blaze as a spunky, funky, equestrian horse girl,” Mykal-Michelle Harris (Mixed-ish, Raven’s Home, Big Little Lies), who voices Blaze, told Entertainment Weekly. “She was raised on a ranch with her family, and she’s never afraid to be herself. She’s an older kid, but she’s not afraid to play with toys or to have a whole bunch of horse figurines. That’s kind of her thing.”
Toy Story 5 finds Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) coming into contact with Lilypad (Greta Lee), a smart device that her parents hope will help their now-8-year-old make friends. With all the kids in the neighborhood spending all their time on screens, Jessie sets out on a mission to help Bonnie make a real-world connection. Her journey, however, goes awry, and she winds up sent back to Emily’s old address.
“Blaze finds Jessie and Bullseye after a series of unfortunate events, and she immediately takes a liking to them,” Harris explains to EW. “She obviously loves Bullseye because he’s a horse, and she loves Jessie as a cowboy. She immediately uses her in her playtime, and they have an instant connection, an instant bond. It takes a little bit of time for Jessie to like Blaze, but they do end up forming a connection.”
Who’s Returning for Toy Story 5?
The latest sequel features the return of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the other toys as they find their jobs challenged by Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?
Tom Hanks returns as Woody, alongside Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Greta Lee lends her voice to Lilypad. Some new additions include Craig Robinson as Atlas, a cheerful talking GPS hippo toy; Shelby Rabara as the excitable camera toy Snappy; Scarlett Spears as the sweet and shy 8-year-old Bonnie; Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, an independent 8-year-old girl who loves animals; and Matty Matheson as the tech-fearing toy Dr. Nutcase.
The rest of the cast includes Tony Hales as Forky; Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants; Wallace Shawn as Rex, the anxiety-riddled tyrannosaurus rex toy; Blake Clark as the ever-loyal Slinky Dog; Jeff Bergman as the sarcastic Mr. Potato Head; Anna Vocino as the nurturing Mrs. Potato Head; Annie Potts as the adventure-loving Bo Peep; Bonnie Hunt as the wise rag-doll Dolly; Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, Bonnie’s homemade toy fashioned out of a plastic knife; John Hopkins as the dignified hedgehog plush toy Mr. Pricklepants; Kristen Schaal as the plastic triceratops toy Trixie; Ernie Hudson as the action figure Combat Carl; and Keanu Reeves as Canadian daredevil toy Duke Caboom.
And, of course, John Ratzenberger returns as Hamm, the wisecracking piggybank.
Toy Story 5 is directed by Andrew Stanton, who also co-wrote the script alongside co-director Kenna Harris. The film will hit theaters on June 19.
