Trailer: Alyson Hannigan & Fran Kranz meta-slasher You Might Be the Killer

Meta-slasher flick YOU MIGHT BE THE KILLER starring Fran Kranz and Alyson Hannigan is now available as of today on On Demand and Digital HD. Stars Fran Kranz and Alyson Hannigan are both actors known for their work with Joss Whedon, with Kranz starring in the Whedon produced THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, while Hannigan was in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. But Whedon is nowhere to be seen here, kiddos. This flick is directed by Brett Simmons and it has one hell of a funny backstory.

The concept for the film originated in July 2017 between the banter of two writers, Sam Sykes, and Chuck Wendig, on Twitter, where they had been discussing the tropes of an atypical slasher film. The idea was then developed into a film to be directed by Brett Simmons, with Sykes and Wendig involved as producers. You can read the full Twitter feed between the two RIGHT HERE. I just got finished reading it and it was a delight.

Here's a SPOILER-ISH synopsis:

You Might Be the Killer opens with a bang. Screams, gore, and slasher mayhem tear across the screen with vibrant title cards counting out the total number of dead counselors (current score: A LOT). Sam (Fran Kranz), the head counselor at this remote camp, is safely cooped up in a cabin with a working cell phone, but instead of contacting the police, he calls his friend Chuck (the always-delightful Alyson Hannigan) in a panic.

Chuck is well-versed in slasher movie tropes and leads Sam through all the necessary steps to survive the night while also helping him remember each step that has led to this point. Told from the perspective of the third act looking back upon the horrors and plot twists through flashback, it’s a full reversal of the beats one expects in this subgenre. Rather than endearing us to the characters slowly so we fear for their deaths, we’re shown their deaths almost immediately upon meeting them. Ultimately, instead of being about one-dimensional sexy teens meeting their demise, it’s about the joys of both the kill and the genre itself. Similarly, the film’s secrets are unveiled in an unexpected order: we learn the killer’s identity before we’re told who’s dead. But really, this reveal's the start of the fun.

Brett Simmons directs the film from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Thomas P. Vitale based on a story by Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig. Vitale produces the film along with Griff Furst. Alyson Hannigan, Fran Kranz, Brittany S. Hall, Patrick Reginald Walker, Keith David, and Bryan Price star.
