Melissa Barrera was set to return as Sam Carpenter in Scream 7, but as we know, Spyglass Media fired the actress after a few pro-Palestinian social media posts that it deemed anti-Semitic. The film moved ahead without her, but many fans still want to see the conclusion of Sam’s story. So, what would it take for Barrera to return to the Scream franchise? Don’t get your hopes up.
Melissa Barrera on Scream Return
In a recent interview, Barrera pretty much shut the door on any return to the Scream Franchise, unless Spyglass Media loses the rights.
“No, not with the company that currently holds the rights,” Barrera said. “I love the franchise. I had an amazing time making those movies. But a lot of like the, the hate and the difficulty that I’ve faced in the last years is because the leadership of that company made it a point to label me something that I’m not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right.“
She continued, “Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them. So, not that I’m holding my breath. I don’t think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into more, into hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more, I think yeah.“
Scream 7
Scream 7 moved forward without Barrera (and Jenna Ortega), but much of the rest of the cast returned, including Neve Campbell, who sat out the last movie due to a pay dispute. Despite setting a box-office record for the series, grossing over $213 million worldwide, Scream 7 also received the worst reviews of the entire franchise. But money talks, so naturally, Scream 8 is underway.
Matthew Lillard Regrets Returning
Matthew Lillard returned as Stu Macher (sort of) in Scream 7, but he has since said he feels embarrassed for agreeing to come back after Barrera was fired.
“I went back to do Scream, and I got called out. And I’m like, ‘Oh, f—. That’s brutal.’ I feel bad about that. I feel ashamed about that,” he said. “Because in that moment I was so excited to go back, I didn’t really think about Melissa and that journey. I didn’t say no… I blew that. I’m on the wrong side of history for that. I still like being in the movie [but] it may not have been the best idea.“
