Scream 8 in the works with Poker Face writers tackling the script

Although critics may not have loved Scream 7, the film has become the highest-grossing installment of the entire franchise. So naturally, Ghostface isn’t done yet. Spyglass is developing another sequel, and Deadline reports that a pair of writers have been found to pen the script for Scream 8.

Who Will Write Scream 8?

Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will serve as the writers of Scream 8. The pair are best known as the showrunners of Poker Face, the mystery crime drama created by Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne. They’ve also worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, Prodigal Son, as well as the pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, which the studio recently passed on.

Kevin Williamson Won’t be Back

Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson got the chance to step into the director’s chair with Scream 7, but he’s stated that he likely won’t be returning for Scream 8. “I think the next Scream I’ll probably step back,” he said. “I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins. And I’m excited to see what other storytellers come up with.

Our Reviews Were Mixed

Our own Tyler Nichols, and Scream franchise mega-fan, sadly didn’t enjoy the sequel. “Most of the new characters are simple set dressing or fodder for kills,” he wrote. “I get that this is a slasher but no one even feels dimensional and they hardly get any characterization. With the worst final act in Scream history, I feel like it’s definitely time to put this franchise to bed.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

However, our own Mike Conway found much more to enjoy, although he admitted that the film won’t be for everyone. “The critics are already sharpening their knives, and some fans can’t see past the production hurdles,” he wrote in his review. “But if you can separate the art from the industry mess, you’ll find a lean, mean slasher that definitively answers the existential question of what this series is. At its heart, Scream is Neve Campbell’s franchise.

Make sure to let us know what you thought of Scream 7 as well! The film is also available on Digital as of today.
